Although textual criticism is now commonly thought of as the discipline of editors, paleographers, and bibliographers, it is in fact the most fundamental area of all literary studies - the ground on which every type of literary investigation must stand. But the widening rift between textual criticism and literary interpretation during the past half century represents a crisis in the study of literature today. Neglect of textual scholarship by literary critics has resulted in the dissipation of analytic rigor in literary studies and a confusion of meaning in literary experience. The essays collected in this volume are an initial, cooperative effort to restore the connections between textual and interpretive studies. Each of the distinguished contributors provides not only the benefit of his particular expertise in working out the specific textual problems but thoughtful speculation on what these problems mean m relation to the more general issues of interpretation. The essays are the product of the Caltech / Weingart Conference in Humanities, held in 1982 under the direction of Jerome J. McGann.
