With sensitivity and authority, Ruth Wisse shows how the theme of the schlemiel in Jewish literature has migrated from culture to culture. Beginning with the Ur-schlemiel, the shtetl bumpkin of eastern Europe, Wisse traces his adventures through the works of Rabbi Nachman, Mendele Mocher Sforim and Sholem Aleichem. She then follows his migration to the new world in the writings of, among others, Saul Bellow, Philip Roth, Isaac Bashevis Singer and Bernard Malamud.
