Star Dancer is book 1 of a magical historical fantasy quartet. A great and terrible evil threatens the druids' future in Iron Age Britain. Their only hope is a child who will be born under an untimely comet and who is destined to protect them. As the fated star-shower lights up the sky, the druids are watching. They believe the prophesied boy has arrived. But down in the village, the midwife has just delivered a perfect little girl. Her name is Tegen - and she is the Star Dancer. Tegen is rejected by Witton, the Chief Druid - but when a visitor gives her a green silk shawl, she begins to work real magic. Near death, Witton acknowledges Tegen, forcing her to abandon her family and learn the spells and rituals of the white-robes. But there are those, close by, who secretly plot to destroy her and take power. In the great battle to overcome her enemy, Tegen is triumphant - but the cost is terrible. Now the Star Dancer must continue - alone - to fight against the evil that threatens her world ...

Beth Webb is an avid reader of traditional folk stories and is fascinated by the links between landscape, history and myth. As a teacher of creative writing to children, teenagers and adults, Beth often used a reconstructed Iron Age village on the Somerset Levels (The 'Winter Seas' in Star Dancer, Book 1 of this series) and the nearby Wookey Hole Caves, to help young writers to find inspiration. As she worked, the character of Tegen began to grow within her imagination, taking shape and finding her own story. Months of solid historical research followed. Beth investigated as much as she could about the late Iron Age, what people ate, wore and how they lived, but also how they thought. She read every book she could find on historical druidry, and consulted present day druids. She has walked almost everywhere Tegen walked, exploring the River Severn, climbing Cadair Idris in the fog, visiting the Hill of Tara in County Meath, the coast of Anglesey (Mona) and even tracking down the site of Tegen's heartbreak near Alderly Edge. Beth Webb is an author, performance storyteller, broadcaster, journalist and creative writing tutor. She lives and writes on the edge of the Somerset Levels and has published books for young children (Junkyard Dragon), older children (The Dragons of Kilve and The Fleabag Stories). The Star Dancer Quartet, a major historical fantasy based in late Iron Age Britain was originally written for teenagers but the books quickly became appreciated by adults as well. The richness of this unusual and meticulously-researched series has captivated readers around the world, earning stunning reviews.
