When a vibrant young woman is found in bed by her hotshot businessman husband, carved from belly to throat with a very sharp knife, the elite Robbery-Homicide Division of the LAPD responds in full force. Best-case scenario for lead Detective Lena Gamble: Nikki Brant’s husband killed her, case closed, and on to the next crime scene before the ravenous Hollywood media can get their lurid tabloid machinery up and running. Unfortunately for Lena, though, she knows that best-case scenarios only happen in the movies. The murder is the first in a series of brutal crimes against beautiful women thought to be perpetrated by the same man, a killer dubbed Romeo in the press. It’s the case of a lifetime, and promises to either elevate Lena to the upper echelons of a publicity-hungry department in need of heroes, or bring about a very public and painful fall from grace. Lena has been in the public eye before, on the night her rock-star brother was gunned down on a dark street in Hollywood - an unsolved murder so grisly she’s never recovered. She knows the score when the press and the LAPD collide. As the investigation plays out and a massive forest fire blankets the city with acrid smoke, a cloud of conspiracy descends on Lena’s investigation, and she knows she’ll have to grind this one out...because Nikki Brant’s death just breathed new life into more than one closed case...because the web of conspiracy is spun more intricately than she can possibly imagine... and because Lena knows there’s only one rock-solid rule to murder in L.A.: The bigger the spectacle, the deeper the horror.

From the Back Cover:

CITY OF FIRE is my kind of crime novel. Gritty, tight, and assured.”—Michael Connelly

When a beautiful young woman named Nikki Brant is found dead in her bed, the elite Robbery-Homicide division of the Los Angeles responds in full force. Is Nikki another victim of the infamous “Romeo” serial killer? LAPD Detective Lena Gamble will make it her business—in the most high-profile, make-or-break case of her career—to find out.

“A scorcher.”—Baltimore Sun

As the investigation plays out and a massive forest fire blankets the city with acrid smoke, a cloud of conspiracy descends on Lena’s investigation, and she knows she’ll have to grind this one out...because Nikki Brant’s death just breathed new life into more than one closed case...because she’s suddenly stuck in a web of conspiracy and corruption...and because if there’s one thing Lena knows about murder in L.A. it’s this: The bigger the spectacle, the deeper the horror.

“I just discovered Robert Ellis. This book is terrific.”—Janet Evanovich, People

Book Description Paperback. Condition: Good. When a businessman arrives home to find his wife in bed, carved from belly to throat with a very sharp knife, the elite Robbery-Homicide division of the L.A.P.D responds in full force and Detective Lena Gamble prepares for her first major case. At first all fingers point towards the victim's husband, but best-case scenarios only happen in films and it soon transpires that this murder is one of a series of brutal crimes against women and the work of a killer dubbed `Romeo' by the ravenous Hollywood media. Lena is all too aware of the peril of the public eye - she has found herself in it before, on the night of her rock-star brother's unsolved murder five years ago. And now she risks a far more dangerous fame as a cloud of conspiracy descends on her investigation and she edges towards Romeo's deadly line of sight . . . Whilst a massive forest fire blankets the city the murderous trail moves far too close to home and past and present horrors seem to be colliding in a single nightmare. Lena must catch this psychopath before she becomes his next glamorous victim . . . The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine. Seller Inventory # GOR007594187
