This book analyzes the development of indigenous religious, commercial, and political institutions among the Oromo mainly during the relatively peaceful two centuries in its history, from 1704 to 1882. The largest ethnic group in East Africa, the Oromo promoted peace, cultural assimilation, and ethnic integration. This period witnessed flourishing commerce and communication networks that promoted the maturation of Oromo law and government, the integration of foreign ideas, and the assimilation into Oromo of various other cultures.

About the Author:

Tsega Etefa is an assistant professor of History at Colgate University. He received his Ph.D. from Hamburg University. He is the author of Inter-Ethnic Relations on a Frontier: Mätäkkäl (Ethiopia), 1898-1991 (2006); Conflict Resolution through Cultural Tolerance: An Analysis of the Michu Institution in Metekkel Region, Ethiopia (2002).

Review:

'Occasionally, an inspiring book emerges that captures our imagination through the richness of its sources, the depth of its analysis, the freshness of its interpretation, and so eloquently expressing the unique role the Oromo population played in the history of Eastern Africa. Such is Dr. Tsega Etefa's Integration and Peace in East Africa: A History of the Oromo Nation. The publication of this book will enrich, expand, and widen our understanding of the dynamic role the Oromo nation played in Eastern Africa, which hitherto has been neglected in the literature on Ethiopia and Kenya. This is an invaluable book on Oromo history and will remain in demand for years to come.' Mohammed Hassen, Associate Professor, Department of History, Georgia State University
