Knowledge Management and Information Systems Strategy for Growing Organizations provides a novel knowledge-based view of small and growing organizations, including the theoretical basis for many known "rule of thumb" rules for success. It examines the role that Information Systems play in helping organizations ... especially SMEs ... to use knowledge to achieve strategic organizational goals and what guiding principles such systems must adopt. By providing a quantitative model the book is eminently suitable for practitioners who will want to know what it costs and what are the rewards. Adopting a business perspective, it is ideal for students studying Information Systems, IT & Strategic Innovation or Knowledge Management.
The book has harvested widespread academic acclaim and is is often hailed as the most important breakthrough in over a decade.

For many years I have been interested in exactly how innovations arise and are spread. As a lecturer in Computing and Mathematics I thought I would do some 3D modelling. At the same time, and exactly due to my interest in Information Systems, I was fascinated by the inability of IT systems like intranets to provoke or spread innovations, but rather function as information graveyards.
My modelling of Knowledge Management and innovation potential started as a scholarly paper, but it grew and by the time I realized that my "Knowledge Valley Theory" actually explained the evolution of SMEs into Gazelles (or not!) then I knew it was going to be a book. Knowledge Valley Theory provides a knowledge-based view of SMEs and explains why known principles of Business and Management function, plus throws in a few more! Fun parts were working out the number of intra-married people an organization can sustain (!) which was novel.... as well as because KVT is completely quantified I can determine management salary, firm turnover and a whole lot more!
But hey! If I was writing a book, then why stop at the theory level? Given my interest in Information Systems it was natural to go on and explain some guiding principles for how IT should be functioning in helping create and spread new and useful innovations in organizations. Especially close to my heart was my long-standing involvement in E-Learning and derived from that my belief that when employees look up "how to..." on their IT system, that the level of the user should be taken into account: Some will want a short answer and some will want a very detailed answer ... so the Dreyfus and Dreyfus Model of Skills Acquisition finally joins Knowledge Management and the SECI-Cycle!
All in all it was fun to do and thanks to all those at a recent international conference who gave me and my Knowledge Valley Theory a standing ovation.... sure can't get enough of those!
* How do companies such as General Electric and Google use their knowledge to stay ahead of their competitors?
* How can new or established organizations stay competitive in a rapidly changing environment?
* How can information be turned into knowledge that will drive organizational innovation and success?
KNOWLEGE MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS addresses these questions using Knowledge Valley Theory, a pioneering technique that explains how organizations can become more entrepreneurial and innovative. The text also clearly demonstrates the strategic importance of Information Systems in creating better value chains aimed squarely at organizational success and growth.
Linking the areas of Information Systems, management and knowledge-driven innovation makes this an ideal text for undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA students studying Information Systems, Knowledge Management, Technology Management, Entrepreneurship and Strategic Innovation. It is also indispensible reading for consultants and other practitioners.
