FIRST EDITION, hardcover in dust jacket. Published by Columbia University Press 1983. Publisher's statement: "This volume presents a biography and study of the life and times of the poet, playwright and art connoisseur K'ung Shang'jen (1648-1718). He was best known for his play The Peach Blossom Fan, generally considered to be China's best historical drama. A descendant of Confucius, he was also a favorite of the K'ang-hsi emperor and held office in the capital and the provinces. More than simply a biography, this book depicts K'ung's official career and the political and social life of his time. In its account of K'ung's own writings and his friendships with other poets and playwrights the book provides much information on his cultural milieu."
