This important collection is the first appearance in English of four Japanese plays dealing with the most traumatic event in that country's history. The plays range in style from realism to verse drama. Philosophically they embody ideas as diverse as the salvation of humanity by religious faith and a terrifying vision of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as manifestations of humanity's impulse to self-destruction. As testaments from the only nation to have experienced atomic bombing, these plays are deeply moving.
