Hagege, Claude; Tr. By Sharon L. Shelly, Dialogic Species, The: A Linguistic Contribution To The Social Sc
"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
Surveying linguistics from a somewhat unusual perspective, Hagege, a professor of linguistics in Paris, castigates "structural linguistics," in which he includes generative grammar, for a too-narrow focus on phonology, morphology, and syntax. He argues that linguists should consider not only morphosyntactic but also semantico-referential aspects (the real world about which we talk) and the psychosocial relationship of speaker and hearer. "We speak to transmit meaning," he insists. The translation is excellent. Many of the examples are in French, but English translations are given for most of them. There are also examples from a wide variety of other languages. Not an easy book for the nonlinguist, but recommended for academic collections.
