Synopsis

In this hard-hitting paperback, Kenneth Leech "The cross stands between human fallenness and human fulfillment, between dust and glory, between Eden and the New Jerusalem." According to this Anglican priest, the Lenten experience involves a rendezvous with the scandal of Christ's passion. The Jesus who "entered into the pain of the world" calls us to do the same.Leech exhorts readers to study and enact the Lord's servanthood, the ethic of nonviolence, and the love of enemies. This resource is studied during Lent by many church small groups.

From Publishers Weekly

Leech, a well-known Anglican priest and author, has chosen to focus his Lenten study on the importance and meaning of the cross in today's world. In doing so, he asks and attempts to answer some of the most difficult questions about both Christianity and crucifixion. For instance, do Christians merely help people endure pain, or is there a message in their faith about ending pain? Do political positions on contemporary issues really emerge from contemplating the cross and its sacrificial context? Because of the subject matter, style, depth and near overload of information and ideas, this volume will be difficult reading for many but well worth the effort for others just because of the theological jewels imparted.
