Text: English, Czech (translation)
Virtually unknown in this country when awarded the Nobel Prize in 1984, Seifert has long been considered Czechoslovakia's national poet. This volume, the first major collection of Seifert in English, incorporates poems from 18 of his 30 books, plus prose selections from his reminiscences. While his poems have evolved stylistically from an intense lyricism in the 1920s to the conversational free verse of the past two decades, his themes have remained constant: celebration of his native country, a deep concern for the sufferings of others, and a sensuous delight in the beauty of the physical world and the love of women ("All my life I have been faithful to love" he says in "The Plague Column"). A book that belongs in every collection of world poetry. Lawrence Rungren, Bedford Free P.L., Mass.
