Reviews

PreSchool-K-- With the exception of the Rajah, this one-to-ten counting book features animals and insects in double-page ink and watercolor illustrations accompanying simple rhymes. The creatures are rendered realistically with an occasional cartoonish twinkle in the eye. The setting seems to be India through the sixth illustration; but the seven camels are Arabian; the eight peacocks have Norman period architecture as a background; and the pirates of number nine sport European dress. Two illustrations do not match the text. Eight peacocks are reported to be spreading their tails, but only two birds are shown to be doing so. The ten monkeys are called "naughty," but no misbehaving is evident in the family group pictured hugging, swinging, and grooming. A more coherent animal counting book is Carle's 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo (Delacorte, 1968; o.p.). --Jane Saliers, Atlanta Public Library
