The Zambezi is one of the least explored and inhabited rivers in the world.

The Zambezi River follows a 1700-mile course in southern Africa with many tributaries that drain a 500,000-square-mile area. Explorer David Livingstone was obsessed with the river and attempted to follow the course from the source to the sea. In this volume, which combines their photographs with drawings by wildlife artist Larry Norton, the Teedes present a delightful blend of the river's history, culture, personal experience, and environmental issues. In wanting to portray the region as a unique habitat that is vulnerable to, and needs to be protected from, encroachment of human populations, the Teedes have have succeeded admirably. Their photos are not typical of those found in similar books--for example, a rare leopard descending a tree. Readers who enjoyed the two recent biographies of Henry Stanley (Livingstone's savior), John Bierman's Dark Safari ( LJ 11/1/90) and Byron Farwell's Man Who Presumed (Norton, 1989), will appreciate a visual rendition of the areas written about. This is highly recommended.
