Reviews

Gr 4-6-Mostue introduces young readers to 26 "weird and wonderful" mammals-some of which will be familiar (elephant, camel, cheetah, whale) while others are a bit more unusual (hyrax, pangolin, elephant shrew). All but three of the creatures are placentals. The three-to-four pages of information for each animal describe unique or unusual characteristics, habitat, diet, social life, and conservation status, including a map showing worldwide habitats. Each article ends with half a page of fascinating facts about the species. The author's breezy style makes the book easy and fun to read. In describing certain characteristics or habits of individual animals, she often compares them to humans. ("When diving for food the platypus closes its eyes, ears and nostrils to stop water and dirt entering them. I have to use goggles, noseplugs and earplugs.") Metric measurements are used. Clear, full-color photos in a variety of sizes help to create an attractive format. Keep this title on hand to satisfy requests for report material and for recreational reading.-Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH
