Reviews

Grade 5-8 Malam covers all aspects of ancient Rome including its founding, the Etruscans, emperors, Pompeii, religion, and dress. This survey opens with a time line and sustains a rather dry tone throughout. Topics receive two-page treatments with numerous full-color illustrations, maps, and photos as well as "Fact File" boxes. The author provides general information in the text while relegating interesting trivia and specific examples to sidebars. One characteristic that may separate this book from similar titles is the section describing modern excavation techniques. Today's archaeologists push probes with video cameras into the ground and are able to see inside tombs. This aids them in deciding whether or not to actually dig. Additionally, ancient towns buried underneath the soil affect crop growth and help archaeologists identify lost structures. While this book addresses the necessary information, the author's Gladiator: Life and Death in Ancient Rome (DK, 2002), which incorporates Web sites, a more detailed reference section, and spicier details, is a better choice. -Laura Glaser, Euless Junior High School, TX
