Focal Press (Media Manuals) [Published date: 1976]. Soft cover,168 pp. Illustrated [From Introduction] In recent years the animation stand has come to be used more and more in film and T.V. production. There cannot be a viewer who has not seen something shot on one unless they never see titles sequences, optical effects, commercials, or just plain cartoon animation. The chances are that anything which looks 'tricky' or makes a viewer wonder "how did they do that?" - is likely to have gone through at least one stage which involved the use of an animation stand, if indeed, it has not been shot entirely on it. In Britain, the camera used is called a rostrum camera. In simplest terms it can be any motion picture camera equipped for stop-motion photography and mounted on a stand (usually vertical). The camera and the stand is known in the U.S.A. as the animation stand. Zooming (or more precisely 'tracking') is achieved by moving the camera towards the subject being photographed; but for "panning" it is the subject which is moved in a plane 90° to the axis along which the camera travels. This book ranges from the simplest ways in which existing equipment can be adapted to shoot animation or titles, to the much more sophisticated cameras and stands presently in use. The intention is to stimulate the reader to experiment and work out his own solutions to the problems that he may encounter; however simple or sophisticated may be the equipment at his disposal. It has been said that 'nothing is impossible in special effects'/it is equally true to say that 'nothing is impossible on an animation stand'.
