Grade 6 Up A collection of short stories written by authors between the ages of 17 and 24, selected as Whitbread prizewinners in 1985. Throughout, a single motif shines clearly. All these stories describe, in one way or another, late adolescent forays into the wilderness of adult life. Middle age and old age are mercilessly scrutinized and the fear of death confronted. Love, sexuality, friendship and self-awareness are explored. Both the realities of life with its pain, boredom and stress and the furthest horizons of fantasy are included. Particularly notable selections are "Borneo," an excerpt from the fictitious diary of a young library clerk suffering adult pain in her search for personal direction and "Good Intentions," an adult version of the E. T. story, which ends tragically and leaves a thrill of real horror. More varied in mood and content than Adele Geras' Snapshots of Paradise (Atheneum, 1984), this collection too lacks a touch of humor. For YA collections where British fiction is popular.
