Soft cover. No jacket (as issued). 92 full colour, full page illustrations. Introduction by David Bernstein. This is a collection of the very best of Shell art. these posters are more than just a vibrant celebration of one company's enlightened and eclectic advertising policy: they are superb pieces of art in their own right. From the twenties to the fiftiesShell produced some of the best advertising posters that Britain has ever seen. The posters have the great virtue of being both extremely fine commercial art by some of the greatest artists of the period - Ben Nicholson, Rex Whistler, Graham Sutherland, E. McKnight Kauffer and Abram Games (to name just a few) - and a nostalgic view of a lost Britain. Shell quickly realized that their ads promoted not petrol but motoring, and that motoring meant special pleasures - exhilaration, freedom and the joys of the countryside. And so Shell took the whole of Britain as its product - British landmarks, institutions, events, curiosities, achievements, foibles and follies. It was the heyday of commercial art and Shell achieved their aims with extraordinary with, intuition and grace. David Bernstein was one of the best known figures in British advertising, the Founder of The Creative Business and a contributor to the Financial Times and The Times. Book in very good condition. Some slight discolouration and minor marking to covers. Occasional rub to the edges. Internally very clean and bright with little sign of use. Book. Seller Inventory # 1308736
