Synopsis

The realization of international communism was the work of only a small group of revolutionaries. This unique, first-hand account first appeared in 1924, shortly after Lenin's death.

Leon Trotsky, apostle of the doctrine of permanent revolution, gathered together some notes for future biographers and for what he hoped would be his own tribute to Lenin. The fragments fall into three sections, covering the 'Iskra' period in London, the days of the Revolution itself, and personal observations on Lenin in action.

The projected Lenin biography was never completed, so that this work, following so closely on the events which it describes, becomes crucial to an understanding of both Lenin and Trotsky.

First published in Britain by Harrap some forty years ago, the text is a completely fresh translation from the Russian by Tamara Deutscher and includes items never before available in English. Dr Lionel Kochan, author of Russia in Revolution, has written an introductory essay.
