René Gardi (1 March 1909 - 9 March 2000) was a Swiss traveller and author. He wrote particularly on the handicrafts and architecture of West Africa. He won many prizes for literature and in 1967 received an Honorary Doctorate at Bern University. He died in 2000. Mystery, danger and death are the ideas conjured up by the name of the Sahara. Nearly four million square miles in size, much of the enormous barren area of the largest desert on the globe is still unexplored and unknown. But the desert is not deserted, neither is it dead. The vast landscapes are full of life and colour, the unearthly bright moonlight and the awe-inspiring silence leave their mark on all those who experience them. Rene Gardi visited the Sahara many times and remained enthralled by its vastness and its variety. The excellent colour photographs of his book taken on expeditions with his son Bernard and friend, Ulrich Schweizer, capture the many faces of the desert - its terrain, its seas of sand, stone plateaux, mountains, plants, its men and animals. Together with specialized essays on the geography, the animals and the rock pictures of the Sahara by Dr. Karl Suter, Alexander Wandeler, and Dr. Hans Rhotert, Rene Gardi used the material gathered from his desert treks to compile a detailed and comprehensive picture of the magnificence and the very varied beauty of the world' largest desert.
