In this fantasy adventure Colene, Darius, Sequiro and Nona are joined on their journey across alternate universes by Burgess, a tentacled being who needs medical attention. A true appreciation of Chaos Mode will require familiarity with the previous entries in Anthony's "Mode" series, Virtual Mode and Fractal Mode. While Mark Winston's reading voice is pleasant, he fails to bring the characters to life and generate excitement in what is, regrettably, an overextended work. There he is Cyng. Colene thinks of him as King of Laughter, an echo of the love she bears him - and of Darius's ability (in some worlds) to drain the emotion from a person and then broadcast it. Nona is with them, and Seqiro, the telepathic horse. Nona gladly left the land of her obsession (the long-dead Megaplayers) where she had acted as Anchor and interpreter for her new friends, but she did not expect to find a BEM (Bug Eyed Monster) acting as Anchor in the new world. But soon the BEM has a history (overlarge Cambrian chordate more generally encountered as a fossil); a name, Burgess (after the variety of shale he would have been found in had he been a fossil); and an important place in the company of friends. Not only does he tow them through the now-fragmented Modes, but Burgess's psychic harmony saves Colene from the evil grip of the mind predator pursuing her.
