From Library Journal

Both these volumes accurately document Chicago and Illinois, past and present, capturing a wide variety of people, their activities, and the traces they leave. Neither can be considered "objective," for the camera will always be drawn to what is beautiful or squalid. Both beauty and squalor are here. As we look at the photographs of 50 years ago in Chicago and Downstate , we see what we have lost, what we are glad is gone, and what is still--to our embarrassment--here. Changing Chicago , photographs commissioned from 33 photographers in 1987-88, will have the same effect in 50 years. This makes both volumes invaluable documentaries. Highly recommended for photography and Midwestern collections, as well as black studies collections. Chicago and Downstate is also recommended for history collections.
