Synopsis

Sifting carefully through reports from newspapers, magazines, personal memoirs, and letters, Peter Cozzens' Volume 6 brings readers more of the best first-person accounts of marches, encampments, skirmishes, and full-blown battles, as seen by participants on both sides of the conflict. Alongside the experiences of lower-ranking officers and enlisted men are accounts from key personalities including General John Gibbon, General John C. Lee, and seven prominent generals from both sides offering views on "why the Confederacy failed." This volume includes one hundred and twenty illustrations, including sixteen previously uncollected maps of battlefields, troop movements, and fortifications.

Review

"This new volume is sure to interest readers as much as the original series and is highly recommended for public as well as academic libraries." -- Library Journal "Cozzens's selections are noteworthy for their historical accuracy, for lively debates between participants, and because most have never before been reprinted... [This volume] will soon rival its predecessor as one of the most useful and illuminating collections of first person accounts of the most important events of the Civl War... An indispensable addition." -- Kevin J. Weddle, Maryland Historical Magazine "Cozzens came up with the great idea of gathering more first-person accounts published in obscure journals and putting them together, with engravings from the same journals... He's picked accounts that are lively, often controversial, and not available in other modern reprints. A must have book." -- Military Images "Sizzling with essays, testimonies, and writings about individuals and events that affected conflict outcomes of the Civil War... This rich compilation was gathered from original articles published immediately following the war. Far from dry, these are lively and obscure accounts." -- by Aime Merizon, Foreward Magazine "Cozzens has performed an invaluable service in gathering this first-rate collection of primary documents---sources that will benefit Civil War historians and anyone interested in military history." Louisiana HistoryADVANCE PRAISE "Peter Cozzens has compiled a worthy companion to the original volumes of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. It offers an array of testimony about prominent individuals and critical events, much of it written by participants whose decisions and actions helped shape the course of the conflict. Anyone interested in Civil War military or political history will read this book with profit." -- Gary W. Gallagher, Nau Professor of History at the University of Virginia and author of The Confederate War
