In two books issued a half century ago sociologists Robert and Helen Lynd studied Middletown, a typical American community that in reality was Muncie, Indiana. Ever since, observers have returned to this city. Hoover discovered a set of photographs taken during the era covered by the Lynds and uses them to illustrate the community's history. As local history, the book and photos prove undistinguished, particularly for those with little interest in Muncie. But Hoover also employs the photos as historical-social documents, something done most notably by Michael Lesy in his controversial Wisconsin Death Trip ( LJ 7/73). Although some of the chapters, especially one on store windows, show creativity, Hoover spends too much time arguing points with the Lynds' original studies. As a result, this book will have limited appeal for those unfamiliar with Muncie/Middletown. Charles K. Piehl, Director of Grants Management, Mankato State Univ., Minn.
