Synopsis

Finally, in an admirably clear and concise presentation, a book which provides both a substantial theory of language and the main features of English grammar.

This work does not prescribe standards that ought to be imposed; it presupposes that language will be taught as an interesting phenomenon in its own right, and it fulfills the presupposition. A compact study, Cattell's book will painlessly provide students, teachers and other interested persons with an account of English grammar which is consonant with the knowledge discovered in modern linguistics; yet its presentation and basic approach will appeal to and be comprehensible to readers with no specialized linguistic training.

Cattell's excellent transliteration of rigorously-expressed technical jargon into the language of common communication makes his work one much needed, fulfilling an area of language-study now lacking by offering a preliminary foundation for those who wish to proceed to the more demanding study of grammar through linguistics. The suggested method, applied by the author in the book, affords insight into the basic structure or design of our language and assimilates revolutionary findings in the field.

Professor Noam Chomsky in an appraisal of this book said it would be useful for teachers who have to teach the "so-called new grammar," adding, "This book gives a better grasp of fundamentals, at an extremely elementary level, than anything else I'm familiar with."
