"The title is an obvious pun on 'Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture,' the book by Robert Venturi that appeared in 1966 and almost by itself turned a generation of architects away from the stern rigors of orthodox modern architecture.... What architect William Hubbard is trying to tell us in this response is that it hasn't come off—that the so-called 'post-modern' style of architecture as practiced by Mr. Venturi and others has come no closer to meeting the needs of our time than modernist architecture had. We still aren't there yet, he argues—we have not yet found a way of making architecture that fulfills both the needs of the public for a style they can understand and respond to, and the needs of the architectural profession for a style it can feel has advanced the state of its art.
"'Complicity and Conviction' might be called the first serious critique of postmodern architecture. It is provocative, intelligent and self-assured.... This is a work that overflows with good sense about what architecture can mean."
—Paul Goldberger, The New York Times Book Review
