These striking portraits of Indians dressed in richly ornamented clothing and posed in front of brightly painted backdrops record the ongoing folk tradition of itinerant photography. They were taken over a period of several years while the authors traveled with itinerants to village fairs throughout Guatemala.

Avon Neal has written extensively on folk culture.
"In Los Ambulantes Ann Parker and Avon Neal have performed a sweet task of excavation and preservation... [Parker stood to the side as the itinerants worked, and she photographed their subjects readying themselves, posing, or scrutinizing their images afterward. Often she was photographing the identical pose at almost the identical instant, thus nearly duplicating the Guatemalans' photographs with better equipment... sometimes she photographed in color. And what color it is, with the brilliant hues and patterns of Indian textiles and the sunny angles and extravagant flowers of painted backdrops... The photographs are richly reproduced with an emphasis on the dark tones that seem appropriately old-fashioned. Avon Neal writes informatively about the vicissitudes and social facts of the Guatamalan itinerants' careers."
