"Schrank's book is a compilation of articles describing a European worker exchange program funded by the Ford Foundation. Schrank has had four reporter-observers write about the experiences of their particular group of Americans who visited and worked with their European counterparts.... Four job situations were represented at five European sites: auto workers in Sweden, longshoremen in Rotterdam, police in London and Amsterdam, and nurses in London. An interesting sidelight was that originally the program was to be a true exchange with Europeans also coming to the United States, but according to Schrank, 'the Europeans ... politely suggested that they did not have much to learn from us.'"

"Much of the text consists of the comments of the participants on issues that were of particular concern to them individually, such as union membership, safety, communication, professional autonomy, and worker camaraderie ... an interesting glimpse into the nature of worker pride in the United States and abroad."
