From the Author

Dear Reader,

I hope you enjoy reading Reforming the Rake — it's my debut novel and I loved writing it. I started reading historical romances around the age of ten, and I'm afraid my entire adolescent sex education came from this source! I'd always planned, at least in a vague sort of way, that I would one day write them, too. A few months after graduating from college I decided that I'd better get on with it, and this story is the result.

I especially hope that you'll like my heroine, Beatrice. I tried to make her as modern as possible without being too anachronistic. She's bookish, matrimonially challenged, a bit cynical...and yet a hopeless romantic. She's hopeless in many ways, actually. If she really were a modern girl, I'm certain she'd have to seek help from all corners: self-help tapes, hypnopedia, possibly even professional advice.

I also hope that you'll identify with Beatrice — we all need romantic help at one time or another. I know I do. In addition to cardinal sins like sloth and gluttony, I suffer from a general laxity of comportment — I'm sure my personal self-help tape would advise me that eating in front of the TV every night is hardly adult behavior and definitely not conducive to romance.

Can self-help be as simple as buying a dining table? If so, I think it's a small price to pay. I'm working on my second novel right now, so hopefully by the time it comes out, I'll have taken my own advice!

Best wishes, Sarah Elliott

From the Inside Flap

"Since we’re not friends, may I ask you a rather rude question?"

Beatrice blinked. "Excuse me?"

Charles’s green eyes sparkled devilishly. "Why aren’t you married?"

"A great many people aren’t married," she retorted defensively. "I could be asking you the same question."

"Yes, but I don’t want to be married. The fact that you’re in London for the season

implies that you don’t share my sentiments. What’s stopping you? You’re intelligent

and amusing, not to mention," he added quietly, his eyes darkening, "the most beautiful

woman in town. Are you sure you’re really looking for a husband?"

Beatrice colored again. "Are you proposing?" She knew that she shouldn’t have asked

him this question – there was no telling what sort of outrageous answer he’d give – yet

the question had slipped out all the same.

Charles leaned in closer yet again, this time to whisper in her ear. "Not marriage."
