While both authors are concerned with the present state of the Catholic Church in the United States, Gleason looks to the past for help in understanding the present, while Deedy looks at the present and makes predictions about the future. Gleason, professor of history at Notre Dame, has put together a collection of essays he originally wrote between 1969 and the early 1980s. He examines historical periods in American Catholicism that might shed light on today's concerns. Deedy, a journalist, uses his knowledge of recent Church history to describe the future face of American Catholicism. While Gleason is mildly conservative, Deedy is somewhat radically liberal. Contentious, but not abrasive, he criticizes Rome and favors solutions Rome will not accept. Gleason's book is directed to a more educated Catholic audience, Deedy's to a popular audience.
