Soumitra Dutta is the Roland Berger Chaired Professor of E-Business and Information Technology and Dean of Technology and E-Learning at INSEAD. His research interests include electronic commerce, Internet-based learning and process re-engineering. He is the author of Process Reengineering, Organizational Change and Performance Improvement.
Sandeep Srivastava is a co-founder and the CEO of IYCWorld and IYKWorld, Application Service Providers in India. He has an MBA from INSEAD. Previously, he was an IT entrepreneur and worked for IT companies in India and Saudi Arabia.
Much has been written about the "front end" of electronic commerce - what happens on the web site. Yet little attention has been directed to the "back end" - the organizational redesign that is so critical for success on the Internet.
New models of strategic thinking have to permeate the organization. New processes have to be created to fit the new business models. Organizational hierarchies need to learn flexibility and to open up departmental boundaries in an effort to speed up information flow and decisionmaking. A culture to encourage experimentation and learning has to be created.
Adapt or die. Transform to thrive. It's a new world so you need a new way of running your business. A cool looking web site is useless if you haven't got your head around the organizational redesign that is critical for Internet success.
The real winners of the dot-com world will be the old economy businesses that manage to embrace the net and integrate the potential of the web in their existing business.
But how? Going online is easy; succeeding online is much harder. The 'front-end' of e-business is simple. This book looks at he hard stuff. By looking at companies that have done it, it shows how you can profit by getting the 'back-end' right. To do so you must embrace the net.
This book is based on the innovative research undertaken at INSEAD over the past few years in cooperation with several leading companies who have well established and successful Internet-based business processes.
