The Guardian Angels, America's most celebrated public defenders, are now in Britain. Lisa Sliwa, who runs the Angels with her husband Curtis, has drawn on her experience on New York's meanest streets to provide the first ever self-defence book for women. Illustrated with more than two dozen photographs of Lisa in action, "Guardian Angels" provides a complete range of self-defence strategies: at home, on the street or in a shopping precinct, a car park or a car. And, by exposing and dissecting the psychology of muggers, hooligans and rapists, this book aims to help women reject the role of helpless victim and outwit any attacker.

Sliwa, a director of the Guardian Angels (best-known for "patrolling" New York City subways), a fashion model in such publications as Elle and Vogue, and now a professional wrestler, with coauthor Greenberg here offers a defense manual of value to women. Downplaying the martial arts"your physical skills are worthless if you have the wrong attitude"they emphasize attitude training. This consists in large part of using psychological tricks to avoid harassment and intimidation, to inflict pain quickly in order to make an escape and to deal with rapists wielding weapons. They also include tips for safety in parking lots, transit stations, bank machines, shopping malls, pay phones, and give alternatives to burglar alarms and other home security systems. In an autobiographical section, Sliwa describes her unusual personal history, including study at Lake Forest College in Illinois, where she was an economics major, her modeling career, her involvement with the Angels and her marriage to the group's founder, Curtis Sliwa. The national director of the Guardian Angels has written a provocative book on self-defense. As the title indicates, emphasis is placed on developing a positive mental attitude and self-image. This emphasis and most of Sliwa's defense techniques are hard to fault. But her recommendation to fight back when faced with an attempted mugging or rape, even if a weapon is involved, seems extremely reckless: "You should convince yourself before a crime situation occurs that you'll fight the criminal, and be committed to battle regardless of the consequences." A more moderate and potentially more helpful guide, Streetsmart ( LJ 12/1/82), was written by Sliwa's husband Curtis. Not recommended.
