When Gideon Lincecum was born in rural Georgia the 13-colony United States was just three years old. When he died in Washington County, Texas in 1874, the country, its bounds and circumstances had changed to much as to be unrecognizable. Lincecum was a natural scientist and very literate. Both abilities stood him in good stead when it came to describing all that he had lived through. Yet, he is a largely forgotten figure in the U.S. as in Texas.
