(From the dust jacket) Samuel Bell Maxey was an important political figure in nineteenth-century Texas, but no previous book-length study of his life and career has been published, His private papers were only recently made available, and Louise Horton has utilized them as well as other sources in preparing this biography, which includes many of Maxey's own comments on his contemporaries. An emigrant from Kentucky, Samuel Bell Maxey practiced law in North Texas, raised a regiment at the beginning of the Civil War, and returned to defend the Indian Territory during 1863?1865. He was elected on his first candidacy, in 1874, to be the first Democratic senator from Texas after the Civil War and, after two years in office, became Texas's senior senator. He held that position until defeated by John H. Reagan in 1887. Maxey's term of office spanned the turbulent period immediately following Reconstruction, and a great deal of his influence derived from his moderation. His political ideology was more advanced than is suggested by the term Confederate Brigadier, which has been applied indiscriminately to him and his southern contemporaries. He was concerned that the breach caused by the Civil War be healed, and toward that end he was influential among Republican congressmen from the North. His efforts aided substantially in Texas's regaining its full and equal participation as a state in the Union. Louise Horton has treated Maxey's Mexican War and Civil War years briefly in order to devote a large part of this study to his major contribution?his aid to the state and the nation during the period of Reconstruction. His life extended well into the period of the Progressive -Movement, and this biography fills a gap in the history of the post?Civil War period. In addition, his correspondence provides new information on the development of railroads across the Southwest. Louise Horton is a resident of Austin, Texas, She served as an archivist in the Archives Division of the Texas State Library and conducted much of the research for this biography in the Maxey Papers in the Texas State Library. She has previously published several articles on Texas history. Seller Inventory # 001064
