Hornby's 1977 title offered an analysis of script interpretation for the theater. The text includes theories on performance as well as examples from the works of Shelley, Pinter, and Ibsen. In his new preface, Hornby laments the modernization of classic plays, e.g., the Merchant of Venice set in Venice, CA, which he believes subverts the original text. With singing cats and dancing teacups currently ruling Broadway, this book is needed now more than ever.
