The bulk of this volume consists in the autobiographical reminiscences of Ch'i Pai Shih. The editor thought it best to let the subject tell the story in his own way, which resulted in an altogether sincere and touching document. The editor also notes that he was fortunate enough to have acquired some first hand accounts in the form of recollections related to him by friends in Hong Kong, especially events that happened after 1947 where the main narrative ends. Many of the paintings reproduced were not hitherto published. The seals selected not only provide aesthetic enjoyment but tell a story a are revelatory of the artist's thought and personality.
