Recounts Bell's efforts to help a blighted section of Philadelphia

Bell of Pennsylvania's Philadelphia Computer Center is a $25-million building housing $100 million of state-of-the-art equipment located in the middle of what has been called "the grimmest ghetto in all of America." In this in-depth study, Bear, who had notable access to Bell of Pennsylvania's employees and records, stresses the critical role that personalities, ideological commitments, and face-to-face interaction played in bringing the Center to North Philadelphia. The question of "whether there is truly a way . . . to achieve technological excellence and corporate profit while at the same time promoting the economic and human growth of inner-city people" is still to be answered, as the Center has only been open for three years. Recommended for large business and urban studies collections.
