Review
Joan Myers, haunted by her first glimpse of one of the American detention camps to which Japanese were exiled during World War II, set out to unearth the human story hidden in the remains of the camps. She traveled to some of the most desolate areas of the Western United States to visit their locations and make the striking images of building foundations, tombstones, abandoned gardens, tarnished utensils, and broken shoes that accompany Gary Okihiro's highly personal "excavation of self and history." The text incorporates oral histories and reminiscences of survivors--and recalls how the U.S. government later apologized and made financial redress nearly five decades later.
