Fanny Kemble was a woman of fiery temperament and bold determination - a woman who achieved fame as an actress, authoress and abolitionist, yet who also suffered the bitterness of a failed marriage and the heartache of separation from her children. Born in 1809, daughter of the renowned actor Charles Kemble, Fanny herself was soon to take Covent Garden by storm. Her first performance as Juliet in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was greeted with rapturous applause and, at the age of twenty, Fanny found herself the darling of fashionable society. Her reputation grew, she undertook a series of provincial tours and then, in ?432, set pail or America. Here, her reception was equally enthusiastic and she was quickly befriended by the doyens of New England's literary and intellectual coteries. But with her marriage to Pierce Butler, stardom as a stage actress was rapidly eclipsed by notoriety as an abolitionist. Living on a Georgian plantation as the wife to a slave owner, Fanny's hatred of her husband's lifestyle epitomised the split between the North and South over the latter's `peculiar institution'. Her Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation is one of the most valuable documents we have to a balanced understanding of this period. The consequence to Fanny personally was the break-up of her marriage, her return to England and a new career in Shakespeare Readings. She died in 1893, much-respected and well-loved by her public and friends alike. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # 140710
