About the Author

Mai 1765 in Great Neston (Cheshire); 15. Januar 1815 in Calais) war 17981805 Mätresse des britischen Admirals Horatio Nelson. Aus einfachsten Verhältnissen stammend, gelang der schönen Emma der gesellschaftliche Aufstieg bis in die vornehmsten Kreise. Durch ihre von vielen Zeitgenossen als skandalös betrachteten Liebesbeziehungen, ihre Schönheit und als Künstlerin war sie am Ende des 18. und zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts eine europaweit bekannte Berühmtheit. . Nachwirkung: Das abenteuerliche Leben der schönen Lady Hamilton, das zu ihren Lebzeiten einige Skandale hervorrief, wurde in zahlreichen Romanen und Theaterstücken verewigt. Am 20. Oktober 1921 wurde der Stummfilm Lady Hamilton von Richard Oswald uraufgeführt. Eduard Künneke schrieb über sie die (historisch nicht korrekte) Operette Lady Hamilton, die 1926 uraufgeführt wurde. 1929 inszenierte Frank Lloyd Die ungekrönte Königin (OT: The Divine Lady). Corinne Griffith spielte Emma Hamilton, Victor Varconi Admiral Nelson. 1941 entstand eine weitere Verfilmung. In der britischen Produktion Lord Nelsons letzte Liebe (Originaltitel: Lady Hamilton, in den USA als That Hamilton Woman veröffentlicht) von Alexander Korda spielen Vivien Leigh und Laurence Olivier die Hauptrollen als Emma Hamilton und Horatio Nelson. Winston Churchill bezeichnete ihn als seinen Lieblingsfilm und soll ihn nach eigenen Angaben nicht weniger als 83-mal gesehen haben. 1968 wurde der Film Lady Hamilton Zwischen Schmach und Liebe von Christian-Jaque veröffentlicht.
