In an earlier volume, Vanishing Africa (Morrow, 1971), photographer Ricciardi gave us a spectacular view of six tribal groups in Kenya. Using a similar format, she provides here a collection of 220 superb photographs (150 in color) and a trip diary with observations of three cultures of Western Brazilian Amazonia: the Kempa, the Marubo, and the well-known Yanomami. Disease, slavery, and the destruction of native land have reduced the Indian population of the rainforest to about ten percent of what it was when Westerners first encountered these groups. Ricciardi's photographs profile traditional activities of daily life that have survived for centuries. Yet she also describes a recent political unification of many Amazon Indian groups to fight for preservation of their forest. Anthropologist Marcus Colchester provides well-written historical and cultural backgrounds in his introduction for the three cultures. Highly recommended for both public and academic libraries.

The renowned photographer Ricciardi ( Vanishing Africa ) has produced another masterpiece. Her striking images--many are portraits--of Brazilian Indian of three tribes capture the dignity and pride of her subjects as they go about their daily lives; the photographs of lively, playful children are especially appealing. The Indians are the Kampa of far western Amazonia, at the Peruvian border; the Maruba, also in the west, in the Javari River Valley; and the largest major tribe untouched by civilization, the Yanomami, who inhabit a northern area near the border of Venezuela. The text is brief: Ricciardi gives a vivid account of her strenuous journeys into the rainforest; and Colchester, director of the Forest People's Program of the World Rainforest Movement, provides historical and anthropological background for each tribe. Of the 220 photographs, 150 are in color.
