A "companion" (not catalog) to the much-heralded National Gallery of Art exhibit, "The Treasure Houses of Britain," this richly illustrated volume is both handsome to the eye and intellectually pleasing. It is a grand tour indeed: a room-by-room inspection culled from a variety of residencesfrom Castle Howard in Yorkshire to Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshireof halls, galleries and saloons, dressing rooms, chapels, and stairways. The reader gets a picture (and background architectural and social history) of their place in domestic architecture through the centuries. A gazetteer, glossary, and floor plans complete the picture. The 180 color photos make the diversity of design grandly apparent. Essential for architectural and design collections; public libraries might consider as well.
