Synopsis

Gear up for swashbuckling adventure in the second “riveting”* historical thriller in the internationally acclaimed Captain Alatriste series.

The fearless Alatriste is hired to infiltrate a convent and rescue a young girl forced to serve as a powerful priest’s concubine. The girl’s father is barred from legal recourse as the priest threatens to reveal that the man’s family is “not of pure blood” and is, in fact, of Jewish descent—which will all but destroy the family name. As Alatriste struggles to save the young hostage from being burned at the stake, he soon finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a conspiracy that leads all the way to the heart of the Spanish Inquisition.

About the Author

Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s novels have captivated readers around the world and earned him a reputation as “the master of the intellectual thriller” (Chicago Tribune). Originally a war correspondent, he now writes fiction full-time. His novels include the Captain Alatriste series, The Flanders Panel, The Club Dumas, The Fencing Master, The Seville Communion, The Nautical Chart, The Queen of the South, and What We Become. His books have been published in fifty countries. He is a member of the Spanish Royal Academy. He lives near Madrid, Spain.

From Booklist

Spanish novelist Perez-Reverte is known the world over for his historical thrillers, and now his earlier five-novel historical-fiction series, the Adventures of Captain Alatriste, all of which were huge best sellers in his native Spain, is being published in the U.S. for the first time, one volume at a time. Captain Alatriste (2005) was the first to appear, and now the second installment makes its American debut. The novels are set in seventeenth-century Spain, centered in the Spanish capital--during the time when the glitter of the Spanish empire was already showing itself to be thin and worn ("the dark, violent, and contradictory Spain of our Catholic king Philip IV"). Captain Diego Alatriste, a veteran of Spain's foreign wars, is currently a sword for hire. On this occasion, in this completely absorbing novel that, like the first one in the series, absolutely defines swashbuckling, he is contracted to help a man from a Jewish-turned-Catholic family rescue his daughter from behind the thick walls of a Madrid convent, which the chaplain "has turned . . . into his private seraglio." This novel is written in the mold of Dumas' musketeer novels and excitingly upholds the tradition. Brad Hooper

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A woman has been found in a sedan chair in front of a church, strangled. In her hand is a pouch containing fifty escudos and a handwritten - but unsigned - note bearing the words 'For masses for her soul'. The chief constable Martin Saldana confides in his old friend and comrade in arms, Diego Alatriste. Still in danger from the powerful enemies he made in his first adventure, Captain Alatriste is considering returning to Flanders where the war has just resumed. But first, his old friend Quevedo asks him for a favour. The daughter of one of his friends must be rescued from a convent, which certain 'priests' seem to be treating as little more than a harem. Then the woman who brought the girl to the convent goes missing and the connection is made to the murder at the church. It seems that Alatriste's sword is required once more. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR002979463
