From 1775, when John Hamilton Mortimer exhibited his 'Death on a pale horse' to Lord Leighton's abortive project for a Revelation fresco inside the Dome of St. Paul's in the mid-1800s, apocalyptic subjects played an unusually prominent role in British art.
