Synopsis
This book is a study of one of the most brilliant periods of Gothic architecture. During the reign of St Louis, in the middle of the 13th century, Paris became the artistic pacemaker of Europe, and the churches designed for the king of France were looked upon as the height of taste and sophistication. The Sainte Chapelle and other monuments closely associated with Louis IX attracted patrons from all over Europe and Parisian Gothic began to appear in England (Westminster Abbey and Old St Paul's), Germany and Spain. The author traces the gradual emergence and diffusion of the French Court Style and analyses the shifts in royal taste that made it possible.
