Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt, Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - In Godliness and Good Learning, David Newsome explores the changing attitudes which underlay Victorian values, as they were articulated in the public schools, in the ancient universities, and in the Church of England itself. He begins with an account of early-Victorian piety and devotion, which owed so much to the influence of Thomas Arnold. His second study portrays James Prince Lee, a giant among Victorian headmaster-bishops, and he then narrates the moving story of the life and death of Martin White Benson, a gifted Winchester schoolboy, who exemplified the ideals which Arnold and Lee sought to inculcate. In his final chapter, he explains how the more strident creed of muscular Christianity superseded godliness and good learning at the close of the nineteenth century. The result is a masterly evocation of an age so close to our own, yet at the same time so distant. ISBN 9780304322275 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 405. Seller Inventory # 1235446
