Today a dwelling space can be made from many different types of structure: haylofts, ancient abbeys, fish stores, stables, warehouses and water towers are, to the imaginative eye, the shells within which a highly idiosyncratic and much-loved home can be made.
Such projects are not for the faint-hearted. Building regulations may present an awkward obstacle to the owner of a martello tower and everyday facilities such as electricity and running water may not come easy in a triumphal arch. But what links all the homes in this book is a determination on the part of their owners to convert an unlikely building into an unusual and individual dwelling that will perfectly suit their character and lifestyle.

For many years, lofts and warehouses have been converted into dwellings, particularly by artists looking for large, inexpensive living spaces. Mack shows how this trend has been extended to 25 unlikely buildings, such as a hayloft, water tower, and army garages, with text describing design problems and solutions and photographs for the finished product. Each of these buildings has been so expertly transformed it's a pity no "before" pictures have been included, since it seems improbable that any of them could have been designed for anything other than habitation. Interior designers and students will find plenty of ideas for making any building comfortably livable.
