From Library Journal

English artists specializing in custom-made decorative ceramics for the home, the author present dishes, tiles, and other works that are bright and colorful, making use of such traditional techniques as sponging and sgraffito to create a modern "pop" style of animal and flower designs. Here they discuss molding, glazing, and firing in some detail, but their primary emphasis is on decorating techniques. The color illustrations, many of which show finished pieces in room settings in the authors' French cottage, are excellent. This is a good source of ideas for persons who decorate ceramic ware as a hobby as well as for those who are studio artists. Recommended for public library larger craft collections and other decorative arts collections.?Constance Ashmore Fairchild, formerly with Univ. of Illinois Lib., Urbana-Champaign

From Booklist

Hinchcliffe and Barber are British studio potters who have spent years developing the design ideas and decorative techniques demonstrated in this manual. But rather than serve primarily as a practical, how-to guide, their book will be an attractive source of inspiration for students interested in learning about the persistence required of professional ceramic artists intent on producing and marketing tableware for the home. Color photographs illustrate the sponged and stenciled designs gracing the earthenware pottery platters, plates, pitchers, and other vessels made by the authors. Although forming and decorating methods are shown in a step-by-step format, it will most likely take a student with basic ceramic training and some prior knowledge of glazing to follow along.
