Synopsis

The greatest naval campaigns in history, illustrated with state-of-the-art computer graphics, maps, and photographs: this new entry in the widely acclaimed History of Warfare series takes to the high seas in the period between our two largest and most destructive wars. In 1914, international naval power was measured in dreadnought battleships, but within a generation these mighty vessels were rendered redundant. Instead, submarines and aircraft carriers dominated the waters. Battles began to take place at extreme ranges; sometimes rival fleets couldn't even see each other. Amphibious warfare became crucial, both for the liberation of German occupied-Europe and to drive back the Japanese. Through incredible images and insightful analysis by a leading expert in 20th century naval warfare, you'll witness the technological changes that transformed battle; understand the difficulties of progressing from old to new; explore all the key battles; and cover the more rapid period of change in the history of war at sea.

About the Author

Bernard Ireland is the author of JANE'S BATTLESHIPS OF THE 20TH CENTURY, JANE'S CENTURY OF NAVAL WARFARE, and JANE'S NAVAL AVIATION (HarperCollins) and THE MEDITERRANEAN CAMPAIGN (Cassell & Co)

From Booklist

This literate, coffee-table volume on twentieth-century naval warfare is one in a series edited by famed war historian John Keegan and written by barely less distinguished contributors. If it is typical of its ilk, it bodes well for basic military history collections. The text summarizes the operations of the major navies, especially the British, American, and German, in the two world wars and the interwar period, including the growth of naval aviation. Battle accounts are cursory, personality sketches are vivid, but the book's greatest strengths are its maps and illustrations. Its weaknesses include uncertain editing and a paucity of material on the Japanese and Italian navies in World War II and the naval race between England and Germany that shaped the course of naval actions in World War I. The bibliography emphasizes readability, which, given the size of the literature on the subject, is pardonable. If not ideal for serious naval buffs, the book should profoundly pique the interest of the neophyte naval war student. Roland Green

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In 1914 international naval power was measured in dreadnought battleships. They were the index of national power like the 'nuclear club' of those 21st century countries armed with atomic weapons. Every nation with pretentions to world power joined the 'battleship race', from France and Russia to Argentina and Chile. Most critical of all were the rival building programmes of Britain and Germany, a bitter contest that helped trigger the First World War. Within a generation, the mighty battleships were rendered redundant. Submarines and aircraft dominated the seas. Amphibious warfare became crucial: both for the liberation of German-occupied Europe and to drive back the Japanese from their island conquests. Bernard Ireland analyses this extraordinary transition, combining a wide-ranging analysis with vivid narratives of key battles and campaigns. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR002297892
