The markings on USAAF 8th Air Force aircraft have become part of the history of the air war. Some designs followed official patterns very strictly; many more were created on the airfield by unit personnel exercising their unconventional artistic talents. About the Author:
As a boy, Roger Freeman watched from his father's farm as the 8th Air Force took off for its missions over Germany; he has had a lifelong interest in the Mighty Eighth ever since, and now lectures on USAAF history, both here and in America.
